Dr. Angie Averill, a recent transplant to Charlotte, has opened her boutique dental studio not far from the Ballantyne campus. With her unique approach, she creates a calming and soothing “spa-like” experience for her clients.

The daughter of dentists, with training and experience that has taken her from Boston and Vermont to California and now North Carolina, Dr. Averill thrives on using cutting-edge technology to transform lives through dentistry. It is her goal to earn your trust and collaborate with you on a concierge-level experience.

Read below to learn more about her approach and offerings.

You’re new to Charlotte. When did you move here and why?

My husband, Dr. Gordon Averill, and I moved to Marvin, NC, in 2022 with our two young children to be closer to his family. After experiencing the pandemic shutdown and becoming parents, we realized the importance of prioritizing proximity to family. Before relocating, we lived in Santa Monica, CA, where my husband completed his residency at UCLA. Together, we owned and operated our private practice there for five years.

Marvin Dental Studio is different than the typical dental experience. What should a new patient expect?

We take great pride in offering something truly unique. At MDS, the focus is entirely on the patient experience. From the moment you step through our doors, we strive to provide a concierge-level experience, ensuring you feel welcomed, comfortable and cared for.

Our relaxed atmosphere includes thoughtful amenities such as noise-canceling headphones, cozy blankets, comfortable treatment chairs and ceiling-mounted televisions with Netflix so you can enjoy your favorite show during treatment!

The other thing that is important to me is building lasting relationships with my patients. We collaborate to create a custom treatment plan that is tailored to your specific needs.

You provide individual care to your patients. How much time do you usually spend with each patient?

We schedule 90 minutes for our New Patient Wellness Visit. This is designed to give us plenty of time to connect, understand your treatment goals and establish a personalized plan for your care. During this visit, we also provide a comprehensive cleaning, ensuring you leave with a healthy, refreshed smile after your first experience with us.

What is the Airflow cleaning technology?

My new favorite dental technology! Guided Biofilm Therapy with Airflow is a state-of-the-art dental cleaning system designed to gently and effectively remove biofilm, stains and tartar. Using a combination of warm water, air and fine erythritol powder, it provides a more comfortable, thorough cleaning experience while preserving tooth surfaces and soft tissues. GBT promotes better oral health by specifically targeting biofilm, making it ideal for preventive care and periodontal maintenance.

Tell us more about your education.

I earned my dental degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, MA, and completed a post-doctorate General Practice Residency at the University of Vermont Medical Center.

Why is having a spa atmosphere with modern décor important to you?

Going to the spa is one of my favorite ways to relax. I understand that the dentist’s office isn’t typically seen as a relaxing environment for most people. That’s why I’ve incorporated “spa-like” touches into my office, creating a calming and soothing experience to help you feel more at ease during your visit.

Who is an ideal candidate for your office membership plan?

Anyone (like me) who is frustrated with dental insurance companies! At our practice, we recommend treatment based on your unique needs, factoring in what’s best for you — not what insurance companies dictate.

That’s why I created my membership plan, which provides discounts on our fees as a thank-you for being a valued member. With this plan, you can choose a tier that covers your preventative treatments in full (think cleanings, exams, x-rays, remineralizing varnish), there are no deductibles, no maximums, no waiting periods and no hidden rules — just straightforward, patient-focused care!

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received from a patient?

One of the most memorable compliments came from a patient who had avoided dental care for many years due to deep anxiety and fear. They told me that our approach—meeting them where they were emotionally and building trust step by step—made all the difference. Together, we completed their necessary treatment in a way that felt safe and comfortable for them. Hearing them say that not only had we restored their health, but also their confidence in seeking care and their ability to function normally, was incredibly fulfilling. Moments like these remind me that dentistry is about so much more than teeth — it’s about transforming lives.

What inspired you to become a dentist?

Dentistry has always been a part of my life: My parents are both dentists, and I grew up in their small, privately-owned practice where personalized care was the foundation of their work. Watching them build meaningful relationships with patients inspired me from a young age. Later, as a teenager, I went through extensive orthodontic work and jaw surgery to correct my bite. That experience opened my eyes to how transformative dental care can be, not just for health but for quality of life. It was then that I realized dentistry was the perfect blend of healthcare, artistry and the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives.
