Health Care at Ballantyne®
Medical providers offer personalized services and convenience
By Nan Bauroth
As the Ballantyne community continues to grow, medical providers have expanded their footprint to offer customers and residents easy access to a wide range of top-notch care. In this article, we highlight five of these facilities that are not as visible because of their locations on the upper floors of medical buildings but are of tremendous value to patients seeking outpatient surgery, cancer treatment or a full spectrum of therapy and mental health services.
Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute Ballantyne
Located at 15830 Ballantyne Medical Place on the second floor of the Medical 2 Building, Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute Ballantyne offers the full complement of treatment services for patients of Claud Grigg and Vernon Mackie, the facility’s two primary specialists in hematology and medical oncology. Grigg specializes in genito-urinary cancers, while Mackie specializes in colorectal and gastrointestinal cancers. Two other oncologists who focus on different types of cancer also visit the Ballantyne location once a week.
“The mission of Levine Cancer Institute is to offer a high level of care locally, so patients don’t have to travel long distances,” Grigg says. In addition to physician consultation, the Ballantyne facility features a large, windowed treatment room and 15 comfortable recliners for patients receiving chemotherapy, blood, drugs or IV fluids. Sky-tile ceilings give patients the illusion of gazing up into blue skies. Each patient can also have a visitor or family member sit with them during treatment.
Open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the facility has a staff of highly trained, qualified nurses, an on-site lab, a pharmacy and pharmacist, and an oncology social worker to handle treatment-related issues. A nutritionist also frequently visits to discuss dietary issues with patients who may have difficulty eating during treatment or those with feeding tubes.
Availability of clinical trials is another major benefit for Ballantyne patients. “Having the most clinical trials is one of the best features of Levine,” notes Mackie, who explains that clinical trials are open to all Levine patients, except trials with Phase I protocols requiring hospitalization. “Instead of opening only a handful of clinical trials, we have a research group uptown that may look at a patient and suggest they might be a candidate for a trial.” The research nursing team also visits Ballantyne to provide care.
